Product Consolidation Dashboard

Built on Verizon's People Analytics and Insights team. Analyzed 196 internal applications across 1.6 million rows of usage data to help leadership decide what to keep, consolidate, or shut down.

Product Consolidation Dashboard overview

The problem

Verizon's People Analytics team managed over 180 internal applications. Nobody knew which ones were actually being used, which ones were redundant, and which ones should be retired. Leadership was making decisions about application investment without usage data. The team needed a way to see what was happening across the entire portfolio and make evidence-based recommendations.

The discovery

I worked directly with the principal data engineer to understand the data landscape. The usage data lived across two primary tables containing approximately 1.6 million rows: user sessions, access dates, session durations, and app ownership. Previously all the data was stored in a single large table which caused slow processing. We split the metadata into separate tables to improve Qlik performance without losing the ability to drill down into any specific application.

The approach

I started with a wireframe before building anything in Qlik. The dashboard needed to be intuitive for HR leaders and team managers, not just analysts. I designed a four-tier recommendation system: Green for healthy apps, Yellow for low engagement worth monitoring, Orange for apps with usage concerns, and Red for apps with zero user access ready for deactivation. Every app got a classification based on session counts, duration patterns, and user access trends.

The dashboard has seven views: Key Metrics for the overall portfolio health, Technical Metrics for file sizes and resource usage, Detailed Sessions for drilling into individual apps, Duration Distribution for usage patterns, Utilization Rate for cross-app comparison, Session Trends for tracking changes over time, and Employee App Access for identifying who uses what.

Impact

Delivered to senior leadership within my second month on the team. Collaborated across GTS, HR, and Finance to validate findings.

The dashboard identified 26 applications for immediate deactivation and 120 for closer review. Received a return offer at the end of the engagement.
